BRAINSTORMING Creative Thinking Exercise

Creative thinking can be very useful when we have a problem that we need to solve. Finding creative ways to solve problems can become easier using ‘brainstorming’.

Brainstorming is a way of finding lots of different solutions to a problem. The beauty of brainstorming is that there aren’t any right or wrong answers. Absolutely anything goes!

Magazines for 12 year olds

Start by thinking of a problem you are facing. Perhaps you have had an argument with a friend, maybe you can’t do your homework or you have got into trouble for something.

Magazines for girls and boys

Write your problem in the middle of a piece of paper. And circle it.

Now think of as many different things as possible you can do to solve this problem.  It doesn’t matter how crazy they may be or how different they may be from anything you have done before.

Magazines for 6 year olds

Challenge yourself to think about your problem in as many ways as possible. Ask yourself questions like:

  • What would my best friend do in my situation?
  • What has someone I know done in my situation?
  • What’s the craziest thing I could do in this situation?
  • What’s the opposite of what I would normally do in this situation?
  • What have I tried before in a similar situation?
Magazines for 7 year olds

Write down any answers on your piece of paper around the problem you have written in the middle. Keep going until you can’t think of any more to write.

Now go back over your ‘brainstorm’ page and ask yourself how well you think each idea would work and whether you think you would be able to do it. Keep going until you can find the best solution. You can use this creative thinking exercise for many different situations and it is a great way of using creativity to solve your own problems. The more you practice it, the better you will become at it!
